Excursion to Mallorca’s Spectacular Caves
The focus of this excursion is the fascinating world of Mallorca’s caves along the island’s beautiful east coast.
Mallorca’s captivating beauty stretches across both land and sea, but there is another remarkable world hidden beneath the surface. The Coves dels Hams, also known as the “Hook Caves”, are spectacular caves located on the east coast of Mallorca, in the municipality of Manacor, just west of the small coastal town of Porto Cristo.
These fascinating caves are almost as famous as the renowned Caves of Drach near Porto Cristo and are among the island’s most popular attractions. Their hidden beauty was first discovered on 2 March 1905 by explorer Pedro Caldentey. As you enter the impressive cave system along the road to Manacor, you will discover a fascinating labyrinth of winding passages and hidden natural wonders.
One of the main highlights of this underground world is the subterranean lake inside the Coves dels Hams. Although somewhat smaller than the famous underground lake in the Caves of Drach, it has an equally atmospheric and mysterious charm. Looking across the calm surface of the water, you can experience a place where time seems to stand still, surrounded by geological formations shaped over countless centuries.
The Coves dels Hams are not only known for their underground waters, but also for their spectacular stalactites and stalagmites, which hang from the cave ceilings or rise dramatically from the ground. Some of these unique formations resemble trees, hooks and harpoons, giving the caves their distinctive name. The Mallorcan word “Hams” refers to “hooks” or “harpoons”, an apt description of these fascinating works of natural art.
As you walk through the labyrinthine passages of the Coves dels Hams, you will feel as though you have entered a fairytale world of stone and time. The magical atmosphere, accompanied by the gentle echoes of centuries past, creates an unforgettable experience. Descending into these mysterious caves is a fascinating journey into Mallorca’s natural history and underground beauty.
